is there not as much opportunity for premium flying / VDA on the 320 jfk?
Also, does the 320SQ do regular 320 flying? I think I read on reserve you can do regular 320 flying.
My initial inclination was to bid 190, especially since I’m typed on the 175, and then bid the 320 after a year or two like you suggested. But I’d love to fly the bus and just want to weigh my options !
For background I live in NY about 45 mins from JFK. Currently in phase 2 of the hiring process.
BOS SQ Captain here, started as 190 FO in JFK for my first 3 years. Part commuter, part local-ish (drive or NJT train to Jersey) when I started dating my wife. I’ve flown recently with 2 newhires on the BOS SQ trip, both called out on reserve for the SO seat. Both loved the trip but are bidding out on this System Bid, because honestly sending a NH to the SQ in either base is pretty lousy. Sure the plane is new and shiny and the layover fun, but it’s basically a double pink eye, and you get zero stick time, zero real opportunity to actually learn the rest of the operation or get comfortable with the airplane unless/until you get called out on a domestic reserve trip, which is hit or miss. Yes, you can get called for regular 320 flying on reserve, not sure how often that’s happening honestly but would be more often as a newhire while they consolidate you.
The problem with VDA for you is that it’s seniority based, which means you won’t usually see it as a newhire. While premium is first come first-serve, you have to actually be off when it’s offered, which is mostly weekends which you’ll already be working as a newbie.
I’d go 190 JFK in a heartbeat in your shoes. Same pay first year, same type, no-brainer NE/Mid-Atlantic flying similar to what you are used to, then after your one-year seat lock is up you can bid the ‘Bus and will honestly be flying that or the 220 the rest of your JetBlue career (wide body rumors aside, which have been going on since before I was hired 15 years ago….).
