There is absolutely no reason for checking, or the desire to check another Pilot’s schedule. " In addition to the numerous valid reasons cited previously, I would also check the schedules of people +/- 10 or so people from me when considering a bid via the vacancy bid. I would also do this for winter/summer due to shifts in flying(international) throughout the year. Many times what is shown as their schedule as initially bid/awarded was nothing like what was actually flown. I am truly baffled by the UAL lack of "sunshine" on even the most mundane things. At Delta, we can also see what the pilot bid for his monthly PBS bid. So if someone junior got the days off you wanted, you can see how he bid to do that(maybe it was a special reserve line bid). Additionally , there is virtually no clarity to your nonrev listing once the flight has departed. At DAL we can look back for 24 hours and see, by name and DOH, who got on and what priority they used (precludes gate agent shenanigans) ...at UAL once that flight has departed, good luck trying to find out why you got left behind when you thought you would get a seat.
Why do I GAS? Why am I putting this out there? This is not a richard measuring contest. I have a pilot kid at UAL and I am constantly amazed at the differences in the two airlines with information availability. I would like it to be better for my uses (nonrev) and so my kid can have better QOL by having more info. I will also say, I find your PBS bidding rules to very limiting as far as telling it what your desires are. The monthly PBS bidding matrix at DAL provides infinitely (almost unlimited) more opportunities to tell it exactly what you desire( this preserves seniority a bit better) In addition to reserve rules (and abuse by schedulers because they can) there are things that need improvement, and pattern bargaining is the easiest way to do that. (provided you know what other alternatives are)
One more observation if I may. Information availability. Seems like the union had the same logic about ,"why do we need more info"? No contract poll or survey for 4 1/2 tumultuous years prior to the Tumi TA? Seems like they had the mindset of A320..."There is absolutely no reason for
checking polling, or the desire to
checkpoll/survey..."
