I recently traveled to the Caribbean (St. Kitts) for work. Just to make a phone call from the hotel room to an international calling card number (ie connect to their system to call home) cost $.20 a minute. Then you pay for the actual call.
Of course I had to pay to get online ($7/day), but then using Skype I could call back to the states for something like $.02 a min.
I will have to look into Skype more. I'm obviously in the US calling out but I know their plans to Cell phones are pretty expensive.
