The grid is contractually compliant at the start of Initial Open Time, but becomes almost exclusively red at the close. Only the top 10 percent are able to take advantage of the QOL this hard fought provision provides.
This is due to low FO staffing, and because of this, the grid starts with a net reserves of only 0 or 1 for many of the days. There are too many open duty periods compared to the number of available pilots.
By the time the first 5 pilots start adjusting their schedule (dropping most trips so they can become available for premium trips) the grid is almost completely red.
I think according to the red/green arbitration it's not just days, but amount of people above red as well. They can't just set the grid to red+1 and call it a day. And yes, we are short FOs, so I'm sure it sucks.
