The intentional erosion of this profession by managers measuring in quarterly increments is the single biggest cause of the pilot shortage. Drastic wage and retirement cuts during bankruptcy followed by pay adjustments that lag inflation have made the profession unappealing. The pilots we need today made education and career decisions during one of the lowest points in the industry. Choices have consequences. Undervaluing the profession created today's shortage.
