People love to hate California, it’s almost become a cliche. In reality, while CA does have some of the highest income tax rates in the country and fairly high sales tax, most localities have a relatively low property tax rate. If you own property in CA, your overall tax burden is in the middle of the pack as far as states go.
It isn't the property taxes, it is the income tax. Have a house in California, live in LA but buying a house and commuting to a base in a state without income tax will literally result in you owning an asset likely to be worth at least a million dollars when you retire.
