The term “groupthink” was coined by William H. White, Jr. way back in 1952, and it was derived from the word, “doublethink” found in George Orwell’s novel, “1984.”

It connotes “a deterioration in mental efficiency, reality testing and moral judgments as a result of group pressures.”

Twenty years later, Janis Irving defined the primary principle of groupthink as: “The more amiability and esprit de corps there is among the members of a policy-making-in-group, the greater the danger that independent critical thinking will be replaced by groupthink, which is likely to result in irrational and dehumanizing actions directed against out-groups.” In other words, when you belong to a perceived “in-group,” and the members of that specific group all agree about the correctness of their views, you are very likely to give up your own “independent critical thinking” and replace it with the thinking of the group.
