Unless you plan on kicking he bucket early, or having zero medical issues in retirement, this is incredibly short sighted. You’re giving away a huge portion of your income to the govt, when instead you can sock it away tax free and with draw it tax free for future medical care. Using your retirement savings to pay those bills incurs it’s own taxable event (getting double tapped on taxes), and given the trajectory of things those taxes won’t be cheaper in the future.
I say this having a military health retirement, VA disability coverage etc. The RHA will PROBABLY be of no benefit to me but I’ll still take the tax free savings and use. You should talk to a tax pro about what you’re advocating because the cost of keeping that money will probably be eye watering given tax increases and the future cost of health care.
We need our PS checks to be pensionable and have more avenues to lower our tax base, not increase it.
