Type ratings mean nothing. Even if you are awarded an aircraft you are typed and current on you’ll still do the full training course as a new hire.

As far as people getting what they want, that can vary from 0-100%. It just depends on the makeup of the class and what options are in the drop. I met a guy who lives out west with a low SSN and he got ATL 717, which was his dead last choice and for good reason since he’s got a horrible commute and can’t switch to anything out west until a bid after he’s been here 12 months. Other times the class plug gets their first choice. You just never know.
