I would add that on probation a pilot might use a bit of judgement. A Frontier pilot would have to be wearing something that was way off the reservation to get dinged by a check airman, I have never heard of that happening nor have I heard of anyone getting talked to about their uniform. I saw one female captain walking around with some sort of pink flair on the bars of her epaulets. Tacky AF but hey, whatever. Don't sweat it is the basic message, but try to look professional. I dress the part to sent the message that I take my job seriously and respect the profession.
She's irrationally obsessed with uniforms.

But you ought to be failing line checks if you're walking around in your North face. The fact that people aren't, is because the check airman doesn't want to be the bad guy, but we shouldn't be putting them in that position to begin with. I've recently got to spend way more time than I'd chose aboard DL and they have some funny hat stories. I don't want us to ever be like that, but those who can't police themselves ruin it for others.
