The CR7/CR9 are more more efficient than the E-170/E-175. All models have the same GE CF34 engine (slightly different variants via different ID plugs) and carry the same amount of passengers, but the E jets weigh more and thus burn more fuel.

I don't think you will see the E jets leave the DCI fleet though. Delta and its customers are in love with those planes. Who could blame them?
