Wouldn't you be on reserve on both coasts? Why would you commute to JFK for "better" trips? If you're in JFK on reserve you'll just get the 5-day trips that have two red-eyes (assuming you get the 320).
If you'll be driving to LAX, why not take the chance that you don't get called on RSV and enjoy that day "off"?

Yeah, I'm probably competitive now and enjoying my regional, but if I'm forced to upgrade "against my will", I may bolt. Have several classmates already at B6 and absolutely love it.

Great point re: RSV. I'd figure that at least some of the trips I would get would be during daylight hours. Does it take 3 years to hold a line as an FO? I've heard that LAX is relatively junior these days.
