This thread certainly developed better than most crash threads. Total agreement with most of the analysis so far. Single pilot IFR in a minimally equipped bug smasher is no place to be knocking the rust off of marginal piloting skills. The good news is this guy will be alive to read everyone telling him he should find a new hobby.
