Spot on. United pilots find themselves in this position because of ALPA. Specifically an MEC that lacked the SA to bury TA1 so deep that it would never see the light of day.

However, we are ALPA, all of us. ALPA is not “they”, it’s us. We need to get out house in order AND each of us must take ownership. That ownership is a hands-on responsibility that few have been willing to take. It’s not just committees, or elected representatives - but each union member must be an active, knowledgeable participant.

Together we must dictate how much secrecy we will tolerate from the MEC. There is benefit from having a board seat, and some info is covered by NDA. I accept that, but the outgoing MEC blew it.

Together we must dictate the quality, content, and frequency of MEC and LEC communications. I acknowledge broadcasting negotiating positions is counterproductive, but as a matter of process WE must demand better. How did we get to such a failure as TA1?

Together we must force change to the bylaws that recognizes that we’re a geographically diverse group. How many of us commute? There are structural benefits of order and dialog within the union hall. But it’s time to evolve. Unless we can improve participation, which improves awareness, nothing is likely to change.

With regards to the CEO, I’ve seen more than a few full that role and Kirby far and away is dedicated to running an airline. Imagine Smicesk or Tilton or any of the others navigating pandemic or recovery. In negotiations, both sides are expected to get the best deal. Is anyone surprised the company passed a lowball offer? What’s alarming is our union took that offer and passed it as the best we can do.

That’s on us, 100%.

We’re on the way to getting our house in order and I personally hope that honestly, integrity, and a resolve will play a part. To become “the biggest and best airline in the history of aviation” is only possible if we’re compensated as such.

We’ll get there with unity, participation, and resolve. Acting like angry insolent, frustrated children won’t do anything for the cause.

The company gets the labor union they deserve, just as labor will get the company they deserve.
