If it turns out to be an all 787 order, it looks like our mainline fleet types may well dwindle to 737s, 321s, and 787s over the next 15-20 years. Only our current 777-300s could conceivably be around much longer than that timeframe... but I'd guess we'd sell them for freighter conversion once our oldest 200Cs are put out to pasture. Going that way actually makes a whole lot of sense, greatly reducing fleet complexity and training churn. The 787-8/9/10 may not be a perfect replacement for the 757-300, 767, or 777 but they certainly provide about a 90% solution to what each of those fleets each can do best. I could actually see us getting RR engines for at least some of this order to avoid cancellation penalties on the 350 order... and as a hedge against another engine related grounding like the recent PW one. We'd be getting rid of several engine types over time so I don't see much harm in a second 787 engine type.
Considering how slow the WB market has been since 2019 I expect we are getting a smoking hot deal, and it looks like we are getting it right before the WB market picks up again (Av Wk has been reporting recently that carriers who retired WB fleets going into the pandemic are now looking to buy new again). Considering all of the money the CO is looking to save... they would be wise to factor it in to their next contract offer.
