There has never been a country where the people owned everything, people worked as hard as they could, and got paid as much as they needed (spoiler alert: it wouldn't work, because communism assumes people are good). That mill wasn't owned by the people, because the people had no say in what happened at the mill. The party ruled the people, and within the party there was a ruling elite. Not even close to collectivism, just plain dictatorship. And definitely communist in name only. You said it yourself, disagree, and disappear. I am happy for you, you were able to escape whatever country you left. You suffered oppression, not communism. Words matter, especially if you tell other people they have no clue....
