I think this has become an issue due to all the scheduling shenanigans that have become more prevalent. From trip assignment mistakes, to improper use of 23.m.7, to pilots calling to volunteer for GS out of seniority order. There are now a multitude of pilots watching trip coverage to file ACEs, and thousands of hours have been recovered.
Is it unfortunate for this pilot that they are being scrutinized? Yes. The only way I see to avoid it though, would be for all trips to be assigned correctly in the first place (a far fetched dream) and full schedule transparency.
