I did this commute for 4 years, there are easily dozens of United folks who do it weekly. When it’s good, it’s the easiest in the world. Even FedEx has a non stop option late night. When it’s bad though, it completely falls apart in a hurry as they cancel half the flights. Overall though it’s very feasible. I’d also drive it if I had a trip getting done Xmas eve or similar to guarantee I’d get home.
Thoughts though- if you’re commuting anyway, why not Delta? They’ve had talks of a Boston base and you’d likely be going to New York anyway which is the same thing as a EWR commute. You’d then have at least a chance of ending up in Boston vs UA. Other thought Is Jetblue. It’s not a legacy, but you’d be driving to work every day and making relatively comparable compensation. Not sure if you’ve ever NOT commuted, but there is a ton of value in simply driving to work. Enough value that for many it trumps a wide body or (sore subject) profit sharing.
Great question regarding DAL. I interviewed with them before leaving AD and got a CJO, but declined to start with them. Not to say it's completely impossible to get back, especially in today's environment, but I do feel like I've closed the door there to a large degree. If anyone thinks otherwise, feel free to let me know.
I have considered B6 as well. I just don't know at this point...
