Gotta disagree here. First off, by profit metrics alone there’s a good chance we were going to get that 5% before closing a TA, anyway.

Secondly, there’s an optics issue. As long as we’re negotiating anything with that 5% hanging over our head, whatever comes out is going to feel to many like the company’s offer is artificially lowered by 5% as an attempt to “double dip”. (Which was done explicitly in TUMI 1.) It just makes it generally harder to get enough people on board with a TA.

From the moment we signed the COVID LOA, legitimately getting that 5% during contract negotiations was going to be a mess, but that’s just a drop in the bucket of my myriad complaints about that LOA. Since it is officially the law of the land, activating the early raise was probably the best way to separate it from Section 6 negotiations & refocus on a proper contract. It’s up to each of us in voting to make sure that 5% isn’t getting hidden in the final draft.
