FAA limited Newark to 79 flight-operations an hour under a Level 2 “schedule facilitated” classification. That 79/hour is a soft cap and and throughout the day the airport was scheduled for more than 79 flights per hour. Guess when those were? The 1600-1900 bank. Guess who over scheduled based on their 73% share? UA.
Scott and Jon Roitman, who was well over his head as COO, created a canard that JetBlue and Spirit, with 5% and 2% of the schedule, were the cause for congestion because UA couldn’t operated at EWR. I get it, I’d blame everyone else too.
No kool aid on my point. I am not going asking about over scheduling which United has been guilty of. I am talking about United reluctance to pull down the schedule if competition is only to come in back fill. United is only trying to protect its market share and hub. If you were in its position, you’ll be reluctant to pull down your schedule if your competitors are only going to come in take advantage.
