WHEN STOPPED (and you might well be), show them your out of state drivers license, MATCHING out of state registration, MATCHING out of state insurance, and tell them I just got here on (whatever date you last flew in on),. Do NOT tell them, “Oh, this is my California beater I leave parked in employee parking between trips.”
Then hope you never see the same cop again.
They also have a snitch website for your crashpad neighbors to report you:

You MIGHT be able to talk your way out of that, but the process is a hassle. On the other hand, if you DO register your car in California, FTB will probably rule you are a resident.
