As a city Philly is dying, there is no wealth, no industry or a highly educated population like NYC, Washington or Boston. Out of all the northeastern cities it probably suffers from the most despair. If AA can get rid of it they will and honestly they should.

There may not be a ton of money in the city of Philadelphia, but there are a lot of people and there is a fair amount of money in some of the surrounding areas in PA and NJ. Basically anyone around here who has a roughly equidistant drive would much rather go out of PHL than EWR, hands down.
PHL is also low key a good alternative to the NYC airports for connecting traffic going to Europe. PHL will never match the size of the operation and opportunities at EWR, but it does at least have a purpose.
