Upgrades can be handled with plus points or miles but not both and is limited to going up a class above where you booked your ticket (economy ~> Premium Economy or Premium Economy ~> Polaris). The folks that are really building status are ACMI folks and FDX folks who do a lot of international DHing (expensive tickets).
