Propel convention at the museum this morning. Both Ed and Pat Burns were speakers…both talked about BOS.
Ed said we were now number 1 in BOS (didn’t say by which metric). Ed also stated that we are up from 4 international BOS daily departures to 14.
Patrick addressed it. He stated that BOS is falling in the grey area between cheaper to have as a layover and cheaper to have as a domicile, insinuating that future growth would be needed to turn it into a domicile. THEN, he said, “But IF that happens, it will not happen until Q3 or Q4, because we build the airline for the summer”
That all makes sense.
BOS is an amazinng domestic and international market and its good to see DL finally planting its flag there even if it did take 2 decades longer than it should have.
Its more than big enough to be a pilot domicile for at least a fleet or three. However all that saves us is a few DH's and relatively reasonable hotel rates. Like you mentioned, I think what will finally tip the scales is either additional growth (not sure how logistically possible that even is now but we'll see), fleet consolidation within the network, or a slowdown in movement that would blunt the initial hit of another no freeze new category.
I would be interested in what metric was referenced for "number one" as well. Flights? Seats? Revenue? Not that long ago I didn't think DL had the pgysical ability to overtake what JB was both generously gifted to them by us, and what they subsequently built through hard work, a great product, brilliant marketing and exceptional execution. Giving a ruthless competitor an entire terminal just to build another billion dollar terminal in an alley is a future History Channel "Blunders" episode. That DL has overcame that blunder to be #1...or even a strong #2...in that crown jewel market is impressive nonetheless.
