Obesity in this country is an epidemic and coming from a previous career in the medical field it almost always has nothing to do with physiology. Yes there are systemic issues that come into play with weight management but there are also procedures and treatments to counter those things. Pop Culture has has basically imposed an early death sentence by glorifying obesity with those who are morbidly obese. I also worked in pathology and performed many autopsies, you would be amazed at what excessive adipose tissue does to the organs, skeletal stress and vessel structure. Hearts of the obese look like marbled Ribeye’s and I’ve pulled out livers that were completed covered with veils of fat and weighing between 3000-4000 grams which is double the normal weight. I’m sorry but I’ve seen enough to say that the majority of obese folks made the choice to become that way. To demand accommodations for bad choices and then receive them only exacerbates the problem.
Obesity is one of the leading causes of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in this country. We are a nation of undisciplined fat slobs. I had an obese FO not long ago tell me that he couldn’t seem to lose weight even though he was eating less and exercising regularly. When I asked him to list everything that he ate the day prior and describe how much he exercised in a week, we basically figured out that he was eating over 4,500 calories (mostly junk food) a day and exercising consisted of walking about a mile 2-3 times a week. I then told him how I used to be obese and my doctor gave me the come to Jesus talk when my blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol numbers were out of control. The talk worked and I dropped over 50 lbs and my BP and cholesterol numbers are textbook. I cut my daily caloric intake to 2,000, eat healthy foods and not junk, and get around 4 hours of vigorous exercise per week. For all but a few people in society, obesity is preventable, but they don’t have the discipline to regulate what goes in their mouth or to get off of the couch and exercise. It’s hard to have sympathy.
