+1. To add just a little to this good advice, just for general planning purposes. My personal experience as a reserve-by-choice bidder is that the vast majority of the times I got used on SC, I knew about the assignment well before the '3 hour' drive you buddy has. Not all SC callouts are minimum-time. In my experience, most aren't. YMMV.
What guidance can pilots lean on to understand how far they are allowed to be away from base on SCR? How many pilots who drive to JFK are 200 miles or say 2-3 hours drive from base (no traffic, because NYC traffic is utterly insane).
