If you can’t hold your original equipment in a base you want to be, you can bid off after only a year to get to
that base. When you convert is another matter entirely, and it could approach 2 years in the most extreme case anyway. There is a shorter conversion window in the new contract for most bids, however.
That said, even if the 7ER went away soon (which it won’t), getting “displaced” off a closing category comes without a seat lock.
