Not to sound like a Richard, but my own personal belief is the regionals have a hand to play in this too. They have increased congestion by the numbers of flights in and out of some of the busiest airspace in the country. That’s not a swipe at the pilots, they are just doing the best job when they can. But how much of the lift for the mainline is regional flying? And what busy airspace are they flying in? Not saying it’s the biggest reason for delays, but they certainly add to the saturation. I suspect due to the shortage of pilots at the regionals is probably helping to alleviate this, but in terms of airspace efficiency (passengers on a plane per unit airspace) it’s not great. Just my $.02 of course.
