But I am also quite aware that lots of guys do it anyway, and especially with regards to safety if you can't get big picture NEXRAD via wifi, then it's better to have it sometimes on your own ipad than not have it at all. If you can surf tiktak and snatchchat in the cockpit with wifi, then you can absolutely justify having an ipad with ads-b rx without wifi.

Ive never met one “who does it anyway”. It’s not authorized and not worth a potential violation for something that is redundant. The company supplied equipment is enough and if it’s not reliable enough to navigate a particular route you pick another or delay.
So back to the hangar or your moms basement for you, whatever the case may be.
