back in the days with few upgrade opportunities, folks grabbed them no matter which base. Now demand seriously exceeds supply and folks just don’t bid CA for two reasons:
(1) you are senior and could have a decent line as NB CA but WB FO pays almost as much and NB CA is just not worth the hassle - or
(2) you are junior and would be on reserve. Being abused 24/7 is just no fun
added complication is that coastal 737 bases have been shrinking. The former senior NB CA is now a junior NB CA. All of a sudden WB FO looks really attractive
and the would be junior NB CA will be on reserve forever as the base shrinks.
It will be interesting to see what the reserve rules are like in our next contract and if it affects people bidding upgrades. Age 67 (if it passes) will also affect hiring and seniority progression. If hiring does slow, our 1 year captains will be on reserve for a really long time considering they’re almost 5,000 numbers from bottom line holder.
