Almost every CQ cycle we have to do some iteration of autothrottles off. The FAA even encourages it on the line to keep the hand flying skills. Many planes can defer the autothrottles and we, as pilots, should be able to not need them. Like sailing said, use the additives, watch the trends, use known pitch and power, and have a good pilot monitoring. If you are afraid of no autothrottles, you’re the problem. But it should be briefed and done properly, not Willy nilly endgame with no additives inputted and pilot monitoring being surprised by the decision (unless they decide to quit on their own).
I turn off the autothrottles anytime I turn off the autopilot. And yes, I brief it ahead of time.
