I doubt that people are staying at the regionals just because of the initial pay cut. Today a pilot could afford to be more picky. They can afford to not got to the first major that offers them a class date and wait for thR UPS call. So yeah, we need to find a way to attract people through the door. Moving flying down to FL might have been one small step in that plan. I guess we'll see how that goes.
The point is, I’m more worried about RETAINING people than ATTRACTING them. JetBlue is part destination airline and part stepping stone depending on many personal factors. If it was truly a destination airline, like UPS, people wouldn’t have a problem taking the initial pay hit because they know it’s way better year 2 and on. With JetBlue, I think people don’t want to take the pay cut because they’ll take another pay cut (or extend the pay cut) when they leave JetBlue for a legacy. We need to get people to come here because they want to retire here instead of coming here for the type rating, resume builder, better situation if the economy tanks, etc.
I agree, Florida is a small step. Hopefully more bases and a great JCBA are much bigger steps in the right direction. Short story made long, I think we’re both on the same page here.
