HUD is cheaper and Morris planes came with them. That's why we use it vs autoland for cat 3.
I personally like the HUD now that I have gotten comfortable with it after the zero training I received, but it isn't a replacement for autoland. When the chips are down and you are tired after flying a long day and have to do a cat 3 in the dark of the night, the last thing you want to do is click off the autopilot and put one circle inside the next one for 5 minutes.
