Heard the same. The ONLY reason we have a hud is because it was cheaper than the auto land option. Everyone thinking it’s because “military” is fooling themselves.
the planes can auto land right now just don't tell anyone. Also the HUD is less restrictive than auto land. If we are left to only auto land or go somewhere else there will be more diversions. Not a lot, but more. Personally I think the HUD is better having done both.
IDK about other airlines but I've flown all night and never was required to have an operational auto land. This may be a SW industry leading thing.
