I'm shocked, but simultaneously not surprised.
Yes, we have an AIP and awaiting the all-important final contractual language. Of course the membership needs to ratify the final contract.

That said, it seems this latest vacancy is a harbinger of the pilot group's sentiment about the pending contract. Total compensation comparable to Delta, there's improvements in work rules for lineholders and reservists, and yet it seems like the progress on the new contract isn't moving the needle in any significant manner (as of yet) to properly staff the net additional metal for United Next. Certainly it ultimately is management's problem, but I'm surprised there are still plenty of First Officers bypassing upgrade even with a new contract imminent.
Money isn’t the main motivator these days, and most who could upgrade wouldn’t necessarily be on reserve. It’s about days off, relative seniority, control of your schedule, and maintaining a life outside of this job. WBFO only pays a little less, has more days off, less work when on duty, and much better trips. Senior NBFO provides high relative seniority, choice of trips, good vacation slots, etc. Money and reserve rules will chip away at some of the unfilled vacancies, but the company is going to have to realize that their rapid expansion is probably overzealous.
