I don’t remember the whole story, but we used to have quarterly bids. We gave that up in the CBA for some reason to protect vacations when changing seats, etc. Seems like a terrible trade off, but that’s just me. I’m sure someone can provide more details on the how and why. Annual bids allow the company to play with the numbers more too because they can always do a supplemental bid whenever they want. I think the change to the system bid frequency and the reserve grids were two of the biggest gives in our first CBA. Hopefully we can claw that stuff back in the JCBA.
You are correct. The annual bid was to protect your awarded vacation in case you switched seat or aircraft or base throughout the year.
The change to the reserve grids wasn't intentional, at least from the average voting pilot. I don't know anyone who caught the change while reviewing the TA, and certainly the union didn't tell us about the change or what it would mean. That one was a HUGE F-job by someone.
