As a Delta pilot who commutes, I consider our reserve rules to be somewhat overrated for a commuter.

Yes, the new 18-hour long call is great for a commuter, in theory. The big catch is that we can be escalated from long call to short call up to 6 times per month. The escalations are done on a day-by-day basis, and are performed almost entirely at the whim of scheduling.

Unless you’re on a very well-staffed fleet here, it’s not uncommon to have either a trip or a short call period on every single reserve day. Not an ideal situation for a commuter.

ex: Our 4 day rsv blocks pay a min of 24. They award you a rigged 4 day and your guarantee goes up 2.5 to 92.5 since our min paying 4 day is worth 26.5. So you’ll make 92.5 bow even if you don’t work another day of the month.

I’m crediting 120+ on rsv this summer just working over rsv days. Friends at UAL say they never go over guarantee but that’s u der their old cba so wasn’t sure if things changed under the DL new one.
No, reserve assignments all go toward the monthly reserve guarantee here. The only way to get paid above reserve guarantee is to get a premium trip (green slip) on your days off, which is then paid above guarantee (along with the days off being restored).
