The one time I was on AD when it happened, the senior folks brought breakfast and lunch in for junior enlisted (galley access not practical), and did grocery collections for those who needed it at home. That was NCOs and officers, who were also not get paid, reaching into their own savings and credit cards.
It was harder for the dependents of folks deployed at sea though, the various aid and relief organizations had to step in but as far as I could see they got a lot of public support for that cause.

bottom line is government shutdowns shouldn’t happen…
