ALPA is a political machine. They don't want your opinion. If you go there with the intent to 'change things', 1 of two things will happen. 1) you will be shut out of any meaningful involvement in anything, or 2) you will get discredited. I know several guys that went there with the intent of making changes, and those things are exactly what happened to them.

The crowd that brought us TA1 were all shown the door. Seems like the folks who got involved trying to change things, both before and after, were successful, despite a pretty entrenched group of people.
They also brought us things like MEMRAT for LOAs, and other good changes that never would have been considered under the old regime.
