I would say after about year 3, you are so proficient that you can do both jobs in your sleep. I fly way more captain stuff than I do FO, and it takes me about 5 minutes to get back into the FO groove. I went 6 months without flying as a FO and it was like I never left.
That's a good point. At my shop and airframe, once I've finished the originating check (esp. the first flights, which take forever), there's not a lot for me to do as a CA other than grumble at AA for taxiing at 3 knots. The FO does all the engine starts and before takeoff work. I just taxi. So I suppose that makes sense...
