I know some junior captains that are fine with them. They are too junior to hold any day turns but live local. A 16 hour BOS overnight allows them to go see the family in the middle of the trip while still collecting per diem. They’re fine giving up a few hours each month for this.
If they're fine with them then they are mathematically and/or financially illiterate. Happy to be home collecting a few bucks of per diem while giving up $1000 in rig savings? They would be home more often and unencumbered if they were doing trips that paid more than minimum credit. I cannot think of a single rational argument in support of the use of in-base layovers to eat up rig except to screw pilots out of pay.
