Maybe not well know but any pilot can ask for a leave at any time. It's already in the contract see Chapter 13. Contract says "A Pilot may make a written request to the Chief Pilot for a leave of absence for a period of time up to five (5) years." The company is just communicating that they will pretty much approve any requests for January that fit their overstaffing.. There will be takers. Personal or family stuff or people that don't really need the income due to side business, spouse income or whatever. Think the incentives offered are a little funny. No one would ask for the leave for a chance to get a lift ticket.
