Schrute bucks generally favor very long or very short legs. For instance, a 15 minute flight from DEN to COS pays 1 TFP. A very long leg pays greater than the hourly rate. Anything in between it's pretty much a tie.
Where it can be disadvantageous is when comparing apples to oranges for pay purposes. The company has recently decided a TFP is worth a little bit more than it used to be vs hourly pay. They base this on average stage length, which has steadily increased over the years and took a big jump when Hawaii started.
In the end, I think most pilots have been fed the TFP kool aid and believe it no matter what logic anyone uses.
