I think it’s situational dependent. If skies are clear all the way from boring airport to boring airport, I don’t ask much of my FO’s on the van ride. However if I’m taking off out of RNO on a nasty day, I am making sure we are all on the same page for the different issues. If they don’t seem like they are wanting to participate, then fine it’s my leg, you go do the walk around, no problems. I do believe that getting into the books on your off time makes you a better and more professional pilot. So I have never personally bought into the “I only work when I’m at work” crowd.
