Indeed. Not necessarily a year, but in the aggregate yeah, SJU bases historically never last. That said, the longest lasting which comes to mind would be Executive Airlines (most locals would remember it as American Eagle), but it wasn't a major. The rest is just your Cape Air and smaller piston operators, at least on the 121 side.
As a result, a lot of us natives are just as likely to domicile in the southeast conus and just CASS it down to our filial affairs back home. At least that's my plan with aging parents who are dead set to die-in-place, and an anglo RN wife whoc can't take the paycut from what she can command up here. Otherwise I'd be all over this base, especially given MIA jumped the shark for me on the housing front. I wouldn't retire/age in place though, medical access is a problem for specialty care. My parents are insane on that front, but they're old and with sweet public pensions, and will go down with the Titanic. They concede their children had to leave, they knew what they were signing up to give up. It's a tragedy really, but a much more complicated topic outside the purview of an airline message board.
BL, I know plenty in that shadow inventory who would welcome a major putting a SJU domicile. I don't see them having difficulty staffing.
