A while ago, Kirby mentioned in a Q&A that UALs Max order has the ability to convert Max 10 to max 9 at a favorable price. What does that mean in practicals terms? Probably that UAL will be getting 200 Max 10 delayed or 250 max 9s on less of a delay when it's all said and done. Outside shot 100 321 NEO instead for the same price. Any way you slice it, UALs domestic network was neglected for decades and United needs airframes to correct structural deficiencies and compete. COVID showed the real dangers of too heavy of an international footprint without a robust domestic network.

Overall weakness in the economy will have more effect on lost pilot jobs than UAL shuffling around orders and deliveries of different types of Max aircraft.
