Airbus has talked a lot about the A220-500 but it is not currently under development.
Since they can't keep up with the demand for A320s and A321s - even before the MAX problems - they probably have no real sense of urgency about certifying an A220-500.
And when you have people building apps to let the public avoid flying the MAX
