Ok I forgot to include the cavaet that Staples and Office Max/Depot will once a month run a special with these cards for no activation fee... but don't do this with AMEX because AMEX gets to see actual details of your purchases and won't award points for "cash equavalents" ... but Visa and MC and DC and others typically will. Test it out with a small amount first:

Or as you say, buy gift cards from a vendor that you already use (WalMart, Target, Amazon, etc).
