That wasn't a failure. They shrewdly drove up the price and backed off leaving Alaska with a bunch of airplanes they didn't want at twice or thrice the cost.
Some parallels to today, with a deal that will likely not happen, but instead of Spirit at 3X the price it's a very troubled Spirit perhaps not likely to be a significant competitor to JetBlue anymore.
