In a recent UA intro class two of the bottome three in seniority still got upgrade slots. Nor are such slots uncommon:

There's been CA slots in every class since the new contract was ratified. The last vacancy that closed had ~180 unfilled CA bids which will be passed onto new hires. The currency open vacancy has 220+ unfilled CA bids. CA bids have gone all the way down to the 8 ball at least once, and the 2nd most junior person in the class (the 7 ball? 15 ball???) multiple times. Bottom line is they aren't going away any time soon!
Yup, it's a relatively lean probation year and more years of reserve after that, but with 5-6 hundred retirements a year and able to make CA as soon as off probation, your family's economic future is a little more assured. Everybody makes choices, it all depends on what you think is best for you and yours.
